Why Melbourne homes need the wall checked before the bracket is chosen
Melbourne housing stock is unusually mixed, and that is the entire reason TV mounting goes wrong here. The second half is the cabling, and it is where the finish is won or lost. Running power and HDMI inside a wall is regulated work in Australia. A registered cabler can do it legally. Anyone else has to leave the cables visible in a surface duct, which is why so many jobs end up with a plastic channel running down a freshly painted wall. Can a TV be wall mounted on any wall in a Melbourne home?

How long does a TV wall mounting job take?
Most standard installs take two to three hours including the wall check, bracket fitting, cable concealment and testing. A full motion bracket on solid masonry, a fireplace mount, or a job with a new power point behind the screen can run to half a day. We give you a realistic time at the quote rather than an optimistic one.
Can you mount a TV on a brick or concrete wall?
Yes, and it is common work in Melbourne. Solid brick takes masonry anchors set into the brick itself rather than the mortar joints, and concrete apartment walls take specific anchors again. Both hold better than plasterboard once fitted correctly. The trade off is that concealing cables inside a solid wall is often not possible, so we discuss the finish before we start.
Can you hide the cables inside the wall?
Where the wall has a cavity, yes. Power and HDMI are run inside and terminated at a plate behind the screen so nothing is visible. In wall cabling is licensed work in Australia and we hold Cabler Licence T59216, which is why we can do it rather than leaving a surface duct. On solid walls with no cavity we use a slimline channel colour matched to the paint.
How high should a TV be mounted?
Lower than most people think. For a standard lounge the centre of the screen should sit at seated eye level, roughly 1.1 to 1.2 metres from the floor. Bedrooms are the exception, because the viewing position is reclined. Above a fireplace the screen ends up higher than ideal, which is why we fit a tilting or pull down bracket there.
Is mounting a TV above a fireplace a bad idea?
It is the hardest position to get right, but it is workable. Two problems have to be solved: the screen sits above comfortable eye level, and heat rises into the electronics. A tilting or pull down bracket handles the angle, and a mantel deep enough to divert heat handles the rest. We check the heat path at the assessment and will tell you honestly if a particular fireplace is not suitable.
Do you supply the bracket or should I buy one?
We supply brackets to suit most screens and VESA patterns, and we are happy to fit one you have already bought if it is right for the wall and the screen weight. Bring it to the assessment. A surprising number of supplied brackets are rated below the screen they came with.
Can you mount a TV in a rental?
Yes, and it comes up often. Get the landlord’s written permission first for anything drilled. Where drilling is not permitted we can look at freestanding and low profile options instead, and we can make good the wall when you move out.
Do I need owners corporation approval in an apartment?
For a wall inside your own title, generally no. For anything on a common wall or a structural element, usually yes, and the approval takes longer than the installation. We can supply a description of the work and the fixings for the committee.
