That single sentence explains why some installations transform a property and others do nothing at all. If there is decent signal in your driveway and none in your kitchen, a booster is exactly the right answer. If there is no signal anywhere on the block, no amount of hardware will create some.

Why Boosters In Australia Must Be Carrier Approved
This is the part of the job that matters most and the part almost nobody explains. In Australia it is an offence to operate a mobile phone repeater unless the device is approved and supplied through a carrier. Generic repeaters sold online, including the ones advertised as boosting Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all at once, are prohibited devices here.
The reason is interference. A poorly designed repeater does not just help you, it degrades the network cell serving everyone around you, and carriers can and do trace them. Penalties fall on the person operating the device, not the person who sold it, which is worth knowing before something goes on your roof.
In practice this means a legal booster is matched to one carrier’s spectrum. You nominate the network that matters most to your household or business and the unit is configured for it. If someone has quoted you a cheaper multi carrier unit, that is why the price is different. What Changes The Price Of A Booster Installation
The hardware is only part of it. These four decide the figure, and all four are established at the free signal test.
How much signal there is to work with
- Strong outside signal needs less gain and simpler hardware. A weak fringe signal needs a higher gain unit and a far more careful donor antenna position.
How much area needs covering
- One room is one internal antenna. A two storey house, a warehouse or a basement needs several on a splitter, plus the cabling between them.
The roof and the cable path
- Tile, tin, slate or a commercial roof each mount differently, and the run from the donor antenna down to the unit has to be sealed and dressed properly.
Materials that block signal
- Metal cladding, concrete, foil backed insulation and double brick all attenuate signal, which changes how many internal antennas the same floor area needs.

What Decides Whether A Booster Works
What is the most important part of a booster installation? The separation between the two antennas, not the unit between them. A booster with the donor and service antennas too close together hears its own output, oscillates, and shuts itself down to protect the network. Are mobile signal boosters legal in Australia?
Only when the device is approved and supplied through a carrier. Generic repeaters bought online are prohibited devices under Australian radiocommunications law, including the multi band units advertised as boosting every network at once. Operating one is an offence and it interferes with the surrounding network, which is how they get traced. We install carrier approved equipment only.
Will one booster cover Telstra, Optus and Vodafone together?
No, and anything sold on that promise is worth a second look. Legal boosters here are matched to one carrier’s spectrum, so you nominate the network that matters most and the unit is configured for it. If people in the building are split across carriers, raise it at the assessment because it changes the recommendation.
How long does the installation take?
A straightforward single storey home is usually two to three hours including the signal test, antenna mounting, cabling and the post install measurement. Warehouses, basements and multi storey buildings needing several internal antennas take longer, and the timeframe is written into the quote before we start.
Will a booster fix reception in a metal roofed house?
Usually yes, and metal roofed homes are one of the clearest cases for one. The metal is what blocks the signal, so putting the donor antenna outside above it and feeding signal in solves the actual problem. We measure first to confirm there is enough outside to work with.
Will it work in a basement or underground car park?
Yes, and these give the most obvious improvement. They also need the most careful design, because the donor is a long way from the service antennas and the cable run has to be planned so loss does not eat the gain.
What if there is no signal outside my property at all?
Then a booster is not the answer and we will tell you rather than sell you one. A booster amplifies existing signal, it does not create it. On rural properties in that position, satellite internet plus Wi Fi calling is usually the workable path, and we install that too.
Can Wi Fi calling fix this instead?
Sometimes, and it costs nothing to try. With a solid internet connection, Wi Fi calling routes calls over it and can solve indoor call quality with no hardware at all. It does not help cellular data, and it depends on your handset and plan supporting it. We raise it at the assessment where it looks like the simpler fix.
Do you install boosters in vehicles or caravans?
Our work is fixed premises. Vehicle and caravan units are a different product with different approval requirements, so we do not fit them. For a permanent installation at a property we are the right call.
Will it improve data speed as well as calls?
It improves the signal, which usually improves both. How much depends on network congestion at your location, which no booster can change. If the tower serving you is saturated at peak times, better signal will not remove that, and we are upfront about it.
Do you service boosters installed by someone else?
Yes. The most common faults we find are antennas mounted too close together causing the unit to shut down, and prohibited devices that need replacing with legal equipment. Tell us the make and model and we will say honestly what can be salvaged.
Why do you measure before quoting?
Because the readings decide the design and sometimes decide against the job entirely. Gain required, antenna positions, how many internal antennas and whether there is anything worth amplifying all come from measurement. A quote given over the phone is a guess about a building nobody has visited.
