An aerial only works if it is cut for the right band, aimed at the right tower and mounted high enough to clear whatever is in the way. Get any one of those wrong and the symptoms are always the same: pixelation on windy days, channels that vanish in the evening, or a picture that freezes mid sentence. Most of the work we do is fixing exactly that, and about half the time the antenna itself is fine. It is the aim, the cable or the joins that have failed.

Every job starts with a signal reading on the roof rather than a guess from the driveway, and finishes with a reading at the wall plate so you can see what actually improved. Digital TV antenna installation depends on your tower
This is the part most quotes skip. The main transmitters on Mount Dandenong send nearly all channels on VHF Band III, with SBS on UHF. A UHF only unit, which is what most of the small flat models sold online are, will not receive those VHF channels at all no matter how well it is installed. Melbourne also transmits horizontally polarised, so anything mounted the wrong way around loses a large part of its signal before it reaches the cable.
The exceptions matter just as much. Inner city suburbs where high rise blocks the line of sight take their signal from the Bourke Street tower on UHF instead, so a VHF unit is the wrong choice there. Suburbs in the hills such as Upwey and parts of Ferntree Gully have no line of sight to Mount Dandenong despite being close to it, and rely on local infill towers. Out toward Werribee and Point Cook, Mount Macedon is often nearer, and homes pointed at the wrong tower end up missing several channels rather than losing all of them, which is why the fault gets misdiagnosed so often.
Distance cuts both ways. Far from a tower you need higher gain, usually with a masthead amplifier. What actually decides whether your reception is good?
Height and line of sight, then band and aim. An average unit mounted high with a clear path to the tower will beat an expensive one mounted low behind a gum tree every time. That is why we start on the roof with a meter rather than in the catalogue.
Why a bigger unit is not always the answer
If you are already close to the tower, higher gain can push the signal past what the tuner can handle and make the picture worse. How much does TV antenna installation cost in Melbourne?
It depends on what the roof reading shows. A repair, meaning a corroded joint, a realignment or a failed amplifier, sits at the low end. Can you fix pixelation and missing channels without replacing anything?

How long does a digital antenna installation take?

Do I need a signal booster?
Only if the reading says so. Boosters help where signal is genuinely weak, where the cable run is long, or where one head unit feeds several sets. They make things worse where the signal is already strong, because they push the tuner into overload and produce the same breakup you were trying to fix. They also amplify noise along with signal, which is why they belong at the mast rather than behind the TV.
Are your installers licensed and insured?

Will a flat indoor unit work in Melbourne?

There is no separate digital antenna. The term is marketing. It is a piece of metal cut for particular frequencies. What matters is whether it covers the band your channels are transmitted on, whether it is aimed at the right tower, and whether it is mounted high enough with a clear path. An old analogue era unit often still works. A modern one on the wrong band will not.
